The Health – Success Connection

Your wellness determines your willingness and ability to expand your influence, compete and succeed. Your approach to the pursuit of achievement affects your health. It takes both physical wellness and mental resilience to achieve your goals.

Our bodies power our actions. Unwell bodies limit our thoughts and actions. Life issues tend to negatively affect our health. Feeling great, being successful and happy is a matter of balance. This balance involves good health and wise management of resources, skills and expectations.

It isn’t possible to act like – and be – a winner while suffering from heartburn, for instance. It’s very difficult to maintain i.e. healthy blood pressure while under enormous stress. The human being consists of several components: body, mind, emotions and soul. Anyone who believes that each of the aspects of a person is separate from the others doesn’t have a good grasp of the human condition.

Being unwell makes a person passive, complacent and sometimes even, resigned. In other words, unwellness contributes to – if not, causes – unhappiness. Frustration with one’s life has negative impact on a person’s health. It can cause and / or aggravate health problems and undermine efforts directed at maintaining good health. It is a vicious cycle.

Health coaching clarifies the client’s health goals and identifies problems. It explores the client’s lifestyle and diet seeking out opportunities for improvement.

In times past, unwellness and even disease was caused by factors outside of our control. Today, most health issues are caused by lifestyle and / or lack of information. You may be surprised to learn that many symptoms can be prevented and / or remedied with simple lifestyle and nutrition changes.

Life coaching helps to identify problems, create a strategy for solving them and supports the client in implementing the strategy. Accomplishing one’s goals, solving problems, taking charge of one’s life is empowering. 33% of successful life coaching depends on the client’s accountability for progress. Another word for accountability – in the context of life coaching – is responsibility. Exercising responsibility and succeeding over and over again, produces a sense of power. (In my experience, responsibility and power are two sides of the same coin.) A life coaching client is affirmed by the evidence of his or her power, repeatedly. The growing sense of power tends to extend to the willingness to accept more responsibility, including responsibility for one’s own health and self-care.

The foundation of a satisfying life is maintaining a balance between good health and the pursuit of success.

Follow these tips to create more balance between health and success:

  • Meeting your body’s needs and having a well-hydrated, well-nourished, well-rested, physically active body and appreciating it as the home of your selfhood, mind, independence and power
  • Cultivating a hungry mind looking to always learn more, expand and evolve
  • Having a purpose in life
  • Finding a career with growth opportunities
  • Creating a definition of happiness that ISN’T based on competing with the Joneses but your own standards
  • Making time for personal life, family and friends
  • Loving people and activities more than things
  • Believing in something bigger than yourself

The New Year has just begun and many are pursuing extremes: extreme diets, extreme discipline, extreme exercise routines. We all know that extreme resolutions are destined to fail. Why not commit to creating more BALANCE?

Balance may be less radical - and therefore initially less appealing - than an extreme diet but then again, I've never heard of an extreme diet that nourished a person's health, personal and professional life. Have you? Click To Tweet
