Like Anything Else, Morality HAS TO Evolve

The murder of George Floyd is presented to us as a black and white issue. I don’t doubt that discrimination played a role in the tragedy. But to me personally, more than anything, it as an issue of abuse of power, breach of human rights and moral failure.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the job of George Floyd’s arresting officers was to apprehend him and transport him to a police station for a possible investigation. He was apprehended already and the next step was to take him to a police station and transfer his custody to police investigators.

The show of force next to the police vehicle was uncalled for. It served no other purpose than to display “power”. (What power?! Anyone is stronger than a handcuffed and subdued arrestee.)

Human rights? Everybody has the RIGHT to breathe and no one has the right to deprive someone else of it.

Morality? Most of us consider ourselves Christians, but Christian, follower of another religion or non-believer, we all follow some moral norms. We all agree on what’s right and what’s wrong. Torture and murder are wrong by ANY moral standards.

There is no reason, explanation or excuse that could justify torture and murder, no matter who the perpetrators are. Worse, if the perpetrators of such crimes wear police uniforms, it’s implied that such actions are condoned by the authority the perpetrators represent.

As a Personal Development Coach, I believe that life (of both, society and individual) is a process of evolving, learning from past mistakes and becoming better and better over time.

It isn’t just tragic but INTOLERABLE – to the African American community and all Americans – that after so many cases of police brutality and even murders committed by police on members of the black community, no changes have been made to prevent such carnage from reoccurring.

Until nationwide changes in the police training / police manuals are made (perhaps specific to the treatment of African Americans?), the death of George Floyd will remain a stain on our national conscience. Click To Tweet

And the last time I checked, a conscience has NO color.
